What are the different types of electric bikes?

There are two basic types of electric bikes. The first is pedal-assist. Pedal-assist models rely on an electric motor to augment the rider’s effort when pedalling. Rear hub drive ebikes have a higher wattage motor than their mid-drive counterparts, but this decreases the overall range. They are also more sensitive to the throttle function, which can drain the battery faster. A mid-drive motor can be a better choice for a variety of riding situations, including steep hills. A mid-drive electric bike has an adjustable gear system to adjust to your riding needs.

Although rear hub-drive ebikes are easier to find. While rear hub-drive models have higher wattage batteries, the rear hub-drive model has a smaller battery and is, therefore, more affordable. The hub-drive motor is more convenient to remove, but the additional weight can be inconvenient. 

Mid-drive bikes are more expensive than rear hub-drive electric bikes. The motors are typically manufactured in Europe by companies such as Bafang, and are more expensive than rear hub-drive models. This design requires more pedal power to achieve the same speed. Therefore, mid-drive models are best for regular riders who do not use their bike daily. The downside is that chain wear is more severe than with hub-motor-powered bikes, and the rider must slow down their pedal stroke to compensate for the heavy load on the chain.

While both designs have their benefits, mid-drive bikes are best for beginners. They are easier to manage and are more comfortable for people who have trouble with mountainous terrain. The rear hub-drive motor also offers greater assistance for less effort. This is a better option for mountainous riders who don’t mind the extra weight. The rear hub-drive is also easier to fold for storage.
